of the weekend. we know that the fbi is interrogating dzhokhar tsarnaev. what are they hoping to get from him at this point? >> interrogating may be a bit of a grand word here, because it's certainly not the kind of interrogation they had planned, where they speak to someone. it's being conducted with notes and nods and because he can't speak, he's on a ventilator. so it's a very slow process. but during this period, their government is limited in terms of what they can ask him. because they're doing this public safety exception to the miranda rule. they've not advised him of his rights. so they can only ask about potential threats to public safety. were there other conspirators, other bombs out there, any reason to believe that public safety is in any way jeopardized. >> pete, one of the persons cited in terms of this idea that there may have been more violent plans on order at the hands of the brothers is this person who was hijacked by the brothers on thursday night. and the driver of a mercedes suv. we know that he's been cooperating with police. is there anything else that we know about

that possibly dzhokhar tsarnaev is coming back to consciousness and able to communicate with investigators. it all goes back to "usa today" report citing anonymous law enforcement source but if the information hashings out it is certainly significant, the fact he is able to communicate with investigators by writing. he can't speak because as you mentioned there is a gunshot wound either to the neck or jaw or both but he is able to write according to this report and the answers providing to questions are described as substantive. what know from the information the answers he is providing indicates there is not a larger network. there is not a second wave planned or a wave people should be fearful of connected to him. again the information, the sourcing on the information just doesn't give me a whole lot of confidence, jenna. jenna: we'll take that interest consideration, mike as you've been on the ground there for the past several days. we see the flowers behind you and tell us where you are and when will the area around the blast site be reopened to the public? >> reporter: this is copley

in came edge about, massachusetts, a chechen, apparently. dzhokhar tsarnaev. tell us what you know. >> 19 years old from overseas, been in the u.s. for more than a year. both suspects said to be brothers. as we watch that. i want to make one last point here, if i could, come out live here to our location on boylston street. i want the audience to understand just how easy it would have been for these two people to simply walk away from the scene. runners were coming down eastbound here on boylston street. the explosions are dropped at quarter mile down the street. both bombers are walking west on boylston street. it's an easy thing to duck into gloucester or newberry street or com avenue and then cross the river, which is only a quarter mile away and that takes you to the intersection of vasser and main, which is where police were called in last night at 10:30 p.m. after the report of a robbery at a local convenience station. that's really -- that seems to be the best tip yet that we have gotten, to notify authorities that these guys were in the area and they were the people that the f.b
the question is, is dzhokhar tsarnaev that suspect, in that boat without any way out? and are some of the shots and explosions heard in the last few minutes somehow linked to him, from him, being aimed at him? is he still alive? we just don't know. but we do know that it's on going and it is all happening right now at 67 franklin street in watertown, massachusetts, and f course this comes at a time when this city only minutes earlier had gotten a reprieve from no less than the governor to come out your homes to relax, your guard can be let down. you can ease up and then the shots started firing up. within just the last half hour or so, we're told better than 30 shots fired. and within the last five minutes or so we're told at least three large explosions heard. eric sawn? -- sean in boston with the very latest. do we know in fact that the suspect hiding in that boat backyard is dzhokhar tsarnaev? >> reporter: we only know from reports and from sources it is believed that it is the suspect number two who was, reportedly inside that boat. we heard some of those bangs just a few minutes ago, and

, the one they are still trying to find now, dzhokhar tsarnaev was born in kyrgyzstan. his family lives in russia and we're told his father was a public official there at one time. the reason we're told for this extraordinary security in the area of watertown is, of course, because they still don't know where the other of the two brothers, the second bomber is located. they think they know where he is. they believe that's the place they have surrounded and where you just saw kerry sanders reporting but there's a further concern that these two brothers may have had af coccomplices an authorities found another bomb in boston. a device in the charles gate area. they rendered it safe but they are concerned there maybe accomplices. they can't be certain of it. but there's a concern there maybe accomplices at large. you put all of those factors together, and we're told that's the reason for the extraordinary security. there's been a report that one accomplice tried to escape on a train to connecticut. that the train was stopped. we believe now that this is not the case. savannah? >> pete will

that the community sort of begins to wrap its head around this, in so far as dzhokhar and tamerlan tsarnaev were part of the communities in which they lived. one was a wrestler, one was a boxer. >> can you state it a little louder, please? >> i was saying how does the community begin to wrap its head around what has happened. given the fact that two of the suspects, dzhokah tsarnaev and his brother, tamerlan tsarnaev, were very much part of the community in which they grew up. they went to local schools. one was competitive boxer, one was a wrestler. by all accounts they were you know, dzhokhar tsarnaev was seen as a nice guy, a shy guy in his high school. but liked. not an outcast by any means. you know how does a community begin to think of, begin to process something like this? >> well, it is what it is. you know people weren't, the fact that they are among us, humanity, some people who are, who are vicious and violent and morally deformed, we're aware of this. look at the people in texas are now experiencing the fact that you know, two prosecutors were murdered by a home-grown texan. people don't
that dzhokhar tsarnaev, the one everybody is looking for, might be just a few blocks down here at an office complex. a security sensor had been -- had tipped off that there was, authorities, there was some intrusion that led everybody to think he was there. cars were zooming down here with screaming lights, and that turned out to be a wash. so i think that's just another reminder of how cautious we have to be until we know for sure where things stand. what we do know is he's on the loose. we do know -- we don't know -- there's no confidence that they know where he is and whether or not he has any accomplices. that may be an open question at this point. and probably the biggest open question of all is whether there are any more explosive devices, any ieds out there that he's left to maim and kill people that they don't know about. one was found in boston earlier today, and that may be the scariest singleknow, though, th police have been going door-to-door in this area all day. how far along do you think they are in securing the area? because as i understand it, at 12:30 when governor deval p

as today against the second boston marathon bombing suspect. dzhokhar tsarnaev remains hospitalized this morning with injuries including one to his throat. "new york times" is reporting that the department of homeland security decided in recent months to delay action on an application for citizenship from the other suspected bomber, tamerlan tsarnaev. a routine background check revealed he was interviewed by the fbi in 2011 at the request of the russian government, which suspected that the older brother had ties to chechen terrorism. he was killed following a shootout with police early friday morning in boston. cnn's latest reporting shows 57 victims remain hospitalized as a result of the boston bombings including three in critical condition. joining me now is massachusetts senator, william his friends call him mo cowan. thank you, senator, for being with us out of boston. i want to is you what you know about the status of the investigation. has anything new turned up? >> well, good morning, candy. thanks for having me here. and before i respond i want to take this opportunity to on

abc's senior correspondent pierre thomas in washington. pierre, dzhokhar tsarnaev is in serious condition, and in no shape to be questioned. >> my sources are telling me that the suspect has a wound to the throat and neck area, that's made it very difficult to speak. he apparently knows police killed his brother, but that special interrogation team is standing by, ready to go. >> and they'll ask him questions at first without reading him his miranda rights. when do you expect charges to be filed? >> charges could come as early today. terror charges that could bring the death penalty. he won't be read his miranda rights. they're going to use the public safety can exception. they're taking this extraordinary step because there could be an imminent threat still out there. i just got off the phone, george, with a senior law enforcement, of deep concern of ammunition, guns and working bombs these men had. they were so disciplined. >> any indication of another sleeper cell? >> right now, no evidence of a broader plot involving more people here, but law enforcement officials say they c
